Multiple Results Entry Options

The workflow requirements of most laboratories necessitates multiple means of acquiring and recording results based on the testing methodology, sample preparation, instrumentation capabilities, the need to run and record standards and related quality samples, etc. To accommodate these workflow needs WinLIMS.NET™ provides a wide variety of options for sheduling and recording analytical results. These tools allow your lab to be as efficient and accurate as possible and the accessibility of the web-based WinLIMS.NET™ allows access to data as soon as it is released by the laboratory.

Direct Instrument Interface

The most efficient way of entering data is by interfacing your analytical instruments directly to WinLIMS.NET™ using the powerful The Bridge software. Instrument interfacing eliminates transcription error while saving the time that it takes for your lab staff to manually key results. Bidirectional interfacing is available whenever it is supported by the instrument's software. The most important thing to know is that QSI has never found an instrument that supplies electronic output that could not be interfaced!

Results by Sample

On those occasions where it is most convenient to present the sample within a web page and enter the results for one or more of the measured parameters (analytes/characteristics), the entry can be performed within the Sample Management page by authorized users. The user who entered the results along with the entry time and date are automatically recorded and all changes to results (if permitted) are recorded within the comprehensive audit trail. While entering results, calculations are automatically performed and results are compared to specification, statistical and detection limits to provide immediate feedback for immediate decision-making. Your company's workflow process determines if results need undergo peer review (verification / validatation) or if they can be made immediately available to the users of the data.

Results by Method

When work is performed on multiple samples for a single analysis, it is usually convenient to provide a results entry page that usese the same format; and WinLIMS.NET™ provides such a page. As with all other results entry pages, the entry of results can only be performed by authorized users.

Results by Batch

Within some laboratories testing is performed within discreet analytical batches that are analyzed on a specific instrument that includes both unknown and quality control samples that are run in a known order in order to evaluate the quality of acquired data. The standards usually include blanks, calibration samples, control samples, duplicates and spikes. By performing analysis in this manner, the results can be reviewed within the proper context and reports can be issued that provide proof of the quality of obtained results.

This form of testing is especially useful within the environmental, clinical analytical service industries where a great deal of variation in the samples tested is encountered because WinLIMS.NET™ Results by Batch:

  • Accommodates multi-component standards
  • Accommodates control standards that are cross-referenced with samples, batches, instruments and analysts
  • Accommodates test methods with calculations that use related standard information
  • Allows the definition of routine batch sequences for each test method that organizes standards, blank, duplicate, spike and unknown samples into a pre-defined pattern to simplify scheduling
  • Associates the standard results with the instrument on which they were run to provide instantaneous control charts
  • Maintains an audit trail on standard materials
  • Provides clear identification of standard, blank, duplicate and spike samples.
  • Allows the validation of results within "brackets" and the assignment of re-analysis

Results by Crosstab

Result entry by Crosstab is the ideal tool for entering data for several samples that are related to each other within a single, condensed matrix where samples can be displayed as rows and parameters (analytes/characteristics) displayed as columns (or visa-versa). Results entry is very efficient when performed in this manner and results can be quickly referenced to related samples to quickly detect anomalies.

Interactive Excel

The use of Excel as an alternate tool for crosstabular results entry is, in many cases, a preferred option. Excel provides the ability to enter data for multiple samples that are related to each other within a single, condensed matrix where samples can be displayed as rows and parameters (analytes/characteristics) displayed as columns (or visa-versa). Results entry is efficient when performed in this manner and results can be quickly referenced to related samples to quickly detect anomalies.

Results by Excel
Microsoft Excel is probably the most popular tool that is used within laboratories throughout the world. Within many labs users have become accustomed to using Microsoft Excel as a tool for recording information which has made it a defacto standard through its wide use. Although Excel is a great tool for entering data and performing calculations, it is severly lacking in its ability to act as a safe and secure data repository for quick recall and reporting.

WinLIMS.NET™ Interactive Excel is a component that is included within the WinLIMS.NET™ Bridge that allows you to get the best of both worlds. End users can continue to use the familiar Microsoft Excel software for results entry and the entered results will be saved to WinLIMS.NET™ in a seamless manner to provide an organized, audited data repository that can be used to better manage your company.

Excel can also operate in a standalone manner to allow remote results entry using Laptops or Tablet PCs while creating samples and collecting data in the field. When the PCs are reconnected with the internet (or corporate intranet), the results are automatically synchronized with the WinLIMS.NET™ database.
